Note (4) May 1778 Court (page 322) Benjamin Dodd appointed Constable. (Peters, pgs. 17 and 46) Note (5) Recruited at the age of 17 in February 1776 as a Drummer (instrumentalist) joining Capt Alexander Dick's company of Continental Marines. At the age of 18 the "Drummer" designation was dropped in favor of Rifleman with the rank of private. Note (6) Recruited in 1776 at the age of 17 in Richmond by Capt. Alexander Dick as a Continental Marine assigned to the First Virginia Line. The period of enlistment was for three years. He was ordered aboard the "Mosquito" 4 Dec 1776 with Capt. Dick's Company of Marines and captured at sea 4 Jun 1777 and imprisoned at Bridgetown, Barbados for 8 months under harsh conditions. He apparently serverd the remaining enlistment with other Marines who were incorporated into the State Artillery and State Garrison regiments. Note (7) Married about the time of his enlistment.
