It is presumed this designation is to differentiate him from an older William Smith who is listed as "senr." on the roster. Note (2) March 1779 Court. William Smith recommended as an Ensign. (Peters, page 22, & 53.) Note. While some claim William Smith attained the rank of Captain, this is not true according to GHS King. Note (3) March 1782 Court. William Smith presented certificate for 300 Pounds of beef. (Peters, page 80.) April 1782 Court. To William Smith for a black horse, 6 years old, 15.5 hands high impressed by Francis Triplett.
