Event Notes Note (1) The 1870 census gives his DOB as Feb 1827 and that he arrived in 1847 Note (2) Obituary; Youngstown Vindicator; 28 Apr 1909; pg. 4. Note (3) His obituary indicates he arrived when he was age 21, or 1852. The Ulam reference gives June 1852 as an arrival date. A passenger list indicates he may have arrived with his family aboard the Ship Europe at Philadelphia on 17 May 1851. Note (4) In the index and the marriage return, his name is listed as Howells, James (John). She is listed as being from Warren. Note (5) Richard appears to have been adopted. Note (6) Obituary; Warren Daily Tribune; 7 Jul 1908; pg. 1, col 4. Note (7) Per 1900 census. Note (8) The County Birth Index gives Richard Case Howells, b. 28 Feb 1881 in Niles, son of William Price and Mary McOlive (Vol. 2 page 387). The actual birth record gives Richard Price, son of William Price and Mary McAlive, or McAlwe. Records in Athens County confirm Mary is his mother and that he had a sister. See the obituary of CW Fisher. Richard Howells himself believed his date of birth to be 22 Feb 1881 as given on his draft regristrations. Incorrect dates are also recorded in his marriage license with Helen, his death certificate, and burial marker. Note (9) Adoption papers not located.
